A short while ago Deb & I visited Banks Lake, which is located near Lakeland, Georgia in the southern part of the state. We captured several images of the early morning sky as we were looking out over the lake, which has hundreds & hundreds of cypress trees growing in it. This lake is a stunningly beautiful, peaceful and serene looking lake. It is not an overly large lake but many fishermen use it on a daily basic and, of course, there are many alligators and other wildlife including many bird species that call it home.
We uploaded and posted one of Deb's sunrise image recently and it seems to be acquiring favorable attention we are very happy to write. This image is one of mine (Bill), which I captured with my Nikon D810 camera + a Nikon 24mm wide angle lens. I titled this image a sunset and wish I could write that it was truthfully the same. However, the image I captured was actually a sunrise. Through the magic of a digital program I happen to have I converted it to a sunset and then further created the drama you see in the sky plus the reflections on the water. The end results, at least I hope so, appears to be of a very late evening stormy sky at sunset. We have been told by people who have seen them many times that this type of sunsets do occur over the lake. In fact, we have tried to catch one or two but the sun was setting on the wrong side of the lake when we were there. Therefore, we will probably try several more times during the Fall and Winter months. Now for a few facts I was able to acquire about this beautiful lake.
Banks Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a stunning ecological, geological and historical
treasure just outside of Lakeland, Georgia.
Covering more than 4,000 acres of environmentally sensitive land and water, the refuge is unique in that its topography was formed by ocean waves long ago.
Scientists believe that what is now Banks Lake, the key feature of the refuge, formed as
a natural pocosin or sink. Basically a giant, shallow bowl, the site of the lake was probably created by tidal action thousands of years ago when the ocean covered parts of South Georgia.
Over the years, the shallow area became saturated with ground water and a vast
wetland formed. Cypress forests grew and wildlife flocked to the area. Ancient Native
American hunters and gatherers made heavy use of the swamps and wet prairies, seeking
game and edible plants.
All visits to our FAA-Pixels art sites are welcomed, encouraged and very appreciated. Please visit often and, if you will, tell your friends and family about our art sites. They may find something they like and thank you for the tip.
