Deb and I, once again, revisited the Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge located due south of Tallahassee, Florida along the Gulf of Mexico coast on Sunday September 03, 2017 to photograph the sunset along with all other things of interest. We were very lucky to come across this osprey as it perched after catching a very nice size fish for a meal. As you can see the osprey got plenty wet while making the catch as it was in the process of trying to dry it wings and feathers a little when Deb captured this image all-the-while holding onto the fish with its talon. I saw the osprey as we slowly drove around an area where boaters parked their trucks/trailer after launching their boats. Deb was out of the Jeep before I could stop it and park and had shot some 30 or so images before I could get by her side. To say she was excited about this find would be an understatement. Now for a few facts about this species thanks to Wikipedia.

The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) — also called fish eagle, sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk — is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan range. It is a medium raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and 180 cm (71 in) across the wings. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly greyish on the head and underparts.

The osprey tolerates a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, although in South America it occurs only as a non-breeding migrant.

As its other common names suggest, the osprey's diet consists almost exclusively of fish. It possesses specialised physical characteristics and exhibits unique behaviour to assist in hunting and catching prey. As a result of these unique characteristics, it has been given its own taxonomic genus, Pandion and family, Pandionidae. Four subspecies are usually recognized, one of which has recently been given full species status (see below). Despite its propensity to nest near water, the osprey is not classed as a sea eagle.
